Three checks before you sign

  1. Active, in the right class

    A new roof needs a C-39 roofer or a B general building contractor. Electrical work needs a C-10. Pools need a C-53.

  2. Bond and workers' comp

Every license needs a $25,000 bond. If the crew has employees, the license needs workers' comp, not an exemption.

  3. The names match

The business on your contract should be the license holder, and the license number should be on the contract and the ads.

Rebuilding after a fire?

Unlicensed operators follow disasters. In California, contracting without a license in a declared disaster area is a felony, and a contractor can't take a down payment of more than $1,000 or 10% of the price, whichever is less. Check the license before you sign, and read the hiring guide.
